Air conditioning is essential for keeping your home cool and comfortable. However, systems can act up from time to time, leaving you with inefficient temperature control or even no air flow at all. Luckily, many of these problems are fairly easy for a qualified HVAC contractor to pinpoint and fix. Here are some of the most common issues that could be causing problems for your air conditioning.

What’s Wrong With My Air Conditioner?

1. Ineffective Thermostat

Your thermostat uses sensors to gauge the temperature in your home and tell your AC whether or not cool air is needed. If your system is not running at all or not achieving your desired temperature, the sensor could be knocked out of position or not connected to your thermostat properly. An HVAC contractor can determine if this is the cause and reconnect it if so.

2. Clogged Filter

air conditioningAs air flows through your air conditioning system, it often carries dust or other tiny particles. Filters are there to catch those materials to stop them from circulating around your home. When they get full, it becomes more difficult for air to pass through, making your system work harder than necessary. So if you notice decreased air flow or a system that’s constantly running, check your filter and change it if necessary. You should do this about once per month, even if there isn’t a problem.

3. Coolant Leak

Your AC uses cooling liquid to bring the temperature of the air down. If there’s a break in your line or condenser, that refrigerant can leak out and cause your system to run less efficiently. This is likely the problem if you notice air coming out of your vents but it’s not as cold as it should be. An air conditioning repair company can use a dye to find the source of the leak and replace the part in question.

4. Poor Drainage

Your AC will usually create condensation as it works to cool the air. Most units have a drain to ensure that water is able to escape properly. However, if that drain gets clogged, it can back up and cause issues within the unit itself. This can cause the unit to shut down fully or even circulate dust and mold through your home. If you’re having issues, call an HVAC professional right away to diagnose the problem and unclog the line as quickly as possible.
