When you have a cold and just need some over-the-counter medications or simply want a prescription refilled, you likely head to your neighborhood pharmacy. October marks American Pharmacists Month, giving you a chance to recognize the important work these health care professionals do. Becoming a pharmacist requires immense dedication and a true commitment to helping others. Find out how these individuals go from everyday people to standing behind the pharmacy counter.

What It Takes to Become a Pharmacist

Requirements to become a pharmacist vary from one state to the next. In general, you must have obtained a degree in pharmacy from a certified program approved by your state’s board. This is usually followed by an internship and, finally, a state licensing exam.

pharmacyIn some areas, you may also have to prove that you are of “good moral character.” This is important since pharmacists deal with prescription drugs—which can be abused and dealt on the black market—regularly. Many states, like Ohio, require pharmacists to undergo a comprehensive background check.

How Pharmacists Spend Their Work Day

Since 2004, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has recognized American Pharmacists Month every year. The aim is to raise awareness among the public and patients about how pharmacists can help them, and also flag their role in health care for policy-makers and politicians.

In addition to the safe distribution of medicines, pharmacists often provide immunizations, medication reviews, and blood pressure checks, among other tasks. They also provide valuable disease management counseling, for instance, for patients with diabetes. Often, they are the first point of contact when an individual isn’t feeling well.
