Understanding the 5 Steps to Root Canal Therapy, High Point, North Carolina

Often, patients are nervous about root canals because of the intimidating name. However, dentists perform root canals to remove inflamed, painful tissue from the inside of the tooth, making your smile comfortable and beautiful once again. Here are the five basic steps to root canal therapy.

Understanding Root Canal Therapy

1. Removing Pulp

After the area around the affected tooth is carefully numbed and a rubber dam is placed around the tooth, dentists start by creating a small access point in the tooth. Next, dentists use special tools to scoop out the damaged nerves and blood vessels inside that were causing pain and infection.

2. Cleaning the Roots

dentistDentists also use special endodontic files to ensure the roots of the teeth are cleaned out. Next, the entire inside of the tooth is sanitized with a special solution.

3. Filling the Tooth

After the tooth is cleaned from the inside, dentists use a rubber compound called gutta percha to fill the tooth. This compound seals the tooth and makes the structure more stable.

4. Placing the Crown

Because teeth are naturally more brittle after the blood supply has been removed, your doctor will cap the tooth’s exterior with either a temporary or permanent crown. These crowns are customized for each patient and can be made to blend in perfectly with the rest of your smile.
