Having kids is exciting and challenging for first-time parents, but it can also introduce significant changes in habits and lifestyle. As new parents, you have to be more aware of the likely dangers your curious toddler or crawling baby is exposed to as they discover their surroundings. Child-proofing your home also means protecting and configuring your plumbing system accordingly. Here’s what you can do to keep things flowing smoothly.

Plumbing Tips for First-Time Parents

1. Keep Toilet Lids Closed

Prevent your child from throwing stuff into your toilet that can cause clogs and other possible damages. Keep the lids closed when not in use and install a lock or safety hatch like the ones often used on cabinets or refrigerators to make it more difficult for a child to open.

2. Avoid Flushing Down Wipes

While you have been flushing used toilet paper down the toilet, you should never do the same with baby wipes and diapers. These can easily clog up your plumbing since they take longer to break down and can get stuck in your pipes. Save yourself the headache of clogged drains by throwing soiled wipes and nappies into the trash bin.

3. Use Baskets or Strainers

Place baskets or sink strainers to catch small items and keep them from going down the drain and building up somewhere in the pipes. Sometimes, all it takes is a small toy to clog up your entire sewer system and turn into a full-blown plumbing emergency.

4. Adjust the Heat

Have yourplumbing faucets fitted with anti-scald devices to regulate the temperature as water flows out. Another way to keep your kids from being scalded is by setting your water heater at a temperature lower than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Consider replacing your shower’s mixing valve as well if you notice it getting hotter whenever water is used elsewhere in the house.
