During winter, a power outage can be more than a hindrance, especially if you’re in an area that faces subzero temperatures. If it happens, one of the first steps you should take is to contact a heating contractor to see if they can do something to restore the heat. In the meantime, however, you should also make sure you have the following items.

Emergency Supplies to Have During the Winter

1. Hand-Crank Flashlight

This mechanically powered item is essential for safely navigating your property in the dark. Since the nights are longer during the winter, you’re more likely to need it. If possible, get a combination flashlight and radio; that way, you'll know whether it’s an area-wide problem or not.

2. Blankets

When your heating system is compromised, you should make sure you have enough blankets available while you wait for your heating contractor. In addition to keeping your body warm, you can also use them to block out any drafts around windows and doors.

3. Food & Water

4. First Aid Kit

If you don’t already have a first aid kit, make sure to get one ASAP. It’s useful even when there isn’t a power outage. Already have one? Check whether you need to replenish it, especially the bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, and antibiotic ointments.

5. Candles & Lanterns

Because a power outage will also affect the lighting, you can use candles or lanterns to illuminate the space. Candles can also provide warmth until your heating contractor arrives. If you do use candles, make sure to keep them far away from flammable items, children, or pets.
