For most people, the words “root canal” automatically bring up the image of a dental procedure that is complicated, lengthy, and uncomfortable. Fortunately, this is only a misconception. Root canal therapy is actually a common and stress-free experience for most patients. To further dispel some of the myths surrounding this topic, here is an overview of what to expect before, during, and after getting a root canal.

Before

root canal therapyThe first step will involve a dentist or endodontist giving you a comprehensive exam and diagnosing you with a root canal infection, which will typically warrant root canal therapy. Symptoms include sensitivity to hot and cold foods, tooth pain that can be felt in the bones near the afflicted tooth, and discharge from the root of the tooth.

During

During the procedure, your mouth will be numbed, so you are as comfortable as possible. The endodontist then removes the infected pulp of the tooth from the root canal system, most often with the use of fluids. Since the root system can be twisting and elaborate, the pulp removal may take some time. Expect to spend up to 90 minutes in the chair. Also, not all root canals are performed in one visit, and it's quite common to come back for a second visit to complete the procedure.

After

The dentist will send you home with a detailed list of aftercare instructions. As the anesthetics wear off, the patient will feel some discomfort and sensitivity in the area where the infected tissue was removed. This is to be expected, but prescribed painkillers or over-the-counter pain medications can keep the tenderness and soreness under control. Avoid biting down on the tooth until it has been restored by the endodontist; this may mean only eating soft foods and liquids for a day or two. If the pain continues for more than a few days, or there is any swelling inside or outside the mouth, contact your endodontist immediately.
