Even people who aren’t concrete contractors have most likely seen the large trucks with cement mixers firmly secured to the chassis. The entire assemblage makes it easier for technicians to create high-quality concrete on-site or while driving to destinations. Below is a closer look at how the machines work.

What You Should Know About Cement Mixer Operation

1. Truck Capabilities Are Important

Because of the weight of the cargo, cement mixing trucks often move slower than speed limits when traveling down roads. The assemblage consists of the support frame, engine, and mixing machine. To handle heavy loads, vehicles are often customized to meet the demand of specific applications. This means drums could be smaller or larger for desired use, with engine horsepower ranging from 250 to 400.

2. A Rotating Blade Keeps the Mixture From Setting

Aiea-Hawaii-concrete-contractorWith a portable mixer, there is a drum mounted on the truck frame. Dry aggregate materials and cement powder are poured into the barrel through an opening at the top. While in transit, a water tank attached to the truck pumps the liquid into the drum to create batch concrete. A dedicated motor inside the container operates a spiral blade that turns the mixture. This helps keep the viscosity low until the concrete is ready to be poured.

3. Concrete Is Pushed Deeper in the Drum During Transit

While the cement truck is in motion, the blade rotates in one direction to force the mixture down into the drum. Once the vehicle is parked at a construction site, the direction of the rotating blade changes. This forces the concrete out of a chute assembly. Concrete contractors can lock and unlock the chute, and change its direction, from controls in the truck cabin. Concrete can also be forced into pumps with hoses attached. This makes it easier to pour concrete in confined or hard-to-reach areas.
