What Is Gas Chromatography?

After, a carrier gas, such as helium, hydrogen, or nitrogen, is applied to make it easier for the gases in the sample to flow through a column in the machine. The metal or glass column is typically filled with a boiling liquid. Components of the gas mixture separate once they make contact with the liquid. The individual components of the compound move out of the column and past an electronic detector, which pulls up all the substances in the mixture on a computer screen for geo scientists to analyze.

Once a compound mixture is placed in a gas chromatography machine, it only takes a few minutes to get results. This means geo scientists can evaluate samples quickly for specific applications.
