Alaska’s especially harsh winters can be a trying time for all living things, including trees. To keep your trees safe this winter and help them thrive come spring, there are certain tree services and care activities that you should do in the fall. Below are the four most important things you should know about Alaskan trees and fall care that will keep them healthy.

Tree Services & Care You Should Do During Fall

1. Water Regularly

Alaska’s rainy season typically occurs during the fall, but the increased precipitation may still not be enough. It’s important to keep your soil appropriately saturated to avoid damage to the root system. Plus, with as rough as Alaska’s winters are, your trees will need consistent moisture throughout the fall since they won’t get much from the frozen soil during winter. Be careful not to over-saturate, though. Watering about once a week or so should be enough if the soil begins to feel dry.

2. Plant New Trees

Planting new trees and bulbs during fall allows the roots to build a strong root system before the harshness of winter so they’ll be prepared to bloom in spring when the soil is ready. Waiting too long to plant new trees can result in them being damaged by frost and frozen soil, preventing them from being able to bloom.

3. Trim Branches

Spruce trees, in particular, should have their lowest branches trimmed. A landscaper or tree service can help with this task.

4. Apply Mulch & Protect Saplings

Add a layer of mulch around trees and other vegetation to insulate the roots from the coming cold. For young saplings that are still weak, you should attempt to block the wind and ice from causing damage by constructing temporary shelters around them.
