Impeccable oral health not only helps your children stay happy and confident, but it also eliminates pain and reduces time away from school. However, it isn’t always easy to teach your kids how to care for their teeth and gums, as they may not be interested or understand the importance of oral hygiene. By following these do’s and don’ts, you can get your little one on track to have a bright smile for life.

Do:

Teach proper technique.

If you aren’t brushing your teeth properly, chances are good that your kids aren’t either. You and your little ones should hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use gentle, back-and-forth motions to brush each tooth. Only use tools and toothpaste with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval.

Set a good example.

oral hygieneIn addition to brushing and flossing properly, set a good example for your kids by attending preventative dental care visits. Have your teeth cleaned as frequently as your dentist recommends, usually twice per year, and have a good attitude about the dental care process. Young kids are impressionable and will be more likely to have a positive outlook on appointments if you do.

Don’t:

Focus on failures.

There will be times when your kids forget to brush their teeth or walk into the dentist’s office knowing they have a cavity. Instead of harping on your children for times when they haven’t been successful, focus on their overall progress and be upbeat. Additionally, celebrate successes like cavity-free dental checkups; perhaps you can reward them with a new toy or let them pick out their favorite toothpaste flavor.

Make exceptions.

Although certain circumstances could prevent your child from carrying out their morning and evening oral hygiene routine, try not to make exceptions with your expectations for their brushing regimen. Have them consistently brush at the same time each day so it becomes a routine.
