Though few homeowners put much thought into them on a daily basis, septic tanks are critical parts of a fully functioning home. While individuals may not be in direct contact with the major components of their septic systems regularly, there are still things they should and should not do to ensure the tanks, pipes, and drainage field continues operating without interruption—without requiring the emergency services of a septic contractor. Here are a few do's and don'ts for septic tanks.

Do

Use water responsibly.

septic contractorWhile you don't have to conserve water to the point where you time your showers or don't flush the toilet after every use, it's still a good idea to be conscious of your usage on a daily basis. Small measures, like only using what hot water you need while shaving or limiting the number of times you run the dishwasher every week, can add up in the long run and ease the burden on your septic system.

Avoid garbage disposal.

The garbage disposal can be a useful way to jettison all the food waste that collects in your kitchen sink. However, using it too much is a major strain on your septic system, forcing it to handle solids as well as its daily dose of liquid waste.

Don't

Kill all bacteria.

It's okay to use antibacterial products once in awhile—when the situation calls for it. However, don’t feel like you must exterminate all the bacteria in your home or start using antibacterial products more than is necessary. Your septic tank relies on bacteria to break solid waste down to softer sludge that can then be leached out through the drainage field.

Postpone maintenance.

Septic systems need maintenance at least every couple of years to drain the tank of potentially problematic solid waste. Solid waste inevitably accumulates in your septic tank every few years, and too much of it will eventually leak out into the drainage field, causing serious and costly damage. Hire a septic contractor for routine maintenance to ensure the system is working properly year-round.
