Frigid temperatures, snow storms, freezing rain, and icy roads create complications for any driver, especially those operating hulking vehicles like semi trucks. If you drive a semi truck regularly, prepare your vehicle for winter weather to minimize how often you need towing services and truck repairs. Winter prep work keeps you safe on the road and contributes to timely deliveries.

Preparing Your Semi-Truck for Winter

Treat Diesel Fuel With Additives

Avoid frozen diesel fuel by treating it with the right additives to prevent the fuel from gelling. Purchase several gallons of winter diesel additive before winter gets underway and keep some in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

towingPrevent Frozen Brakes

Water condenses in fuel tanks when the ambient air pressure drops, and the resulting frost can spread through the brake system and cause your brakes to freeze solid. Drain your air tanks and fuel water separators every day when extreme cold sets in to prevent this. You can also put an additive in your air tank to spread through the brake/air system and prevent frozen line issues.

Plug the Block Heaters in Every Night

Plug your truck in every night to keep it from freezing during cold weather. This activates the block heaters that circulate water around the engine to keep it warm. Plug in your truck when the engine is still warm so the heaters do not have to work overtime.

Check Your Batteries & Coolant System

Ensure your batteries are fully charged and in good condition. Check the water level and use distilled water if the batteries need more liquid; consider purchasing a battery water level indicator tool to avoid dried-out battery cells in the future.
