Your storage unit is a perfect solution for de-cluttering your home and organizing your belongings. However, there are a few items you can’t leave in storage. Most facilities have policies about the following items, so you’ll need to make other arrangements for storing them.

What You Can’t Store

1. Guns

A facility which offers gun storage must be specially licensed for the purpose. Most storage facilities require you to find a different solution for your rifles, pistols, shotguns, or any other type of firearm.

2. Live Animals

Additionally, it is easier to forget about animals, and the buildup of waste they would leave would create a hazardous environment for the creature and those who work at the facility.

3. Valuables

While your storage unit is safe from most burglary and vandalism, there is still a small amount of risk. If you have any particularly valuable items to store, you should move them to a safety deposit box—not a storage unit.

4. Hazardous Materials

Chemicals, fuels, and explosives cannot be stored in a rented unit. In addition to the possibility of overheating and causing a fire, they pose a risk to both the storage company’s personnel and other renters in nearby units.

5. Pressurized Items

Aerosols and pressurized tanks are at risk of exploding in a hot storage unit. Just like fuels and explosives, most storage facilities prohibit them, and you’d be wise to find more appropriate temperature-controlled storage.
