If you own, work on, or want to buy an airplane, it’s essential to know the basic parts that make it up. This way, you can more easily research care for those specific aircraft parts or request materials and replacement from the local machine shop. Here are the parts that make up a plane and the role each one serves.

The 5 Main Aircraft Parts

1. Fuselage

This is the body of the plane, where both people and cargo are carried. Depending on the model of plane, fuel may be carried here or in the wings. Regardless, the fuselage holds all the other parts together.

2. Wings

The aerodynamic shape of the plane’s wings generates lift to get the aircraft off the ground. Any problem with the wings is enough to ground a plane for repairs. The wings include ailerons, or moving flaps, which help control the plane’s direction.

3. Empennage

Aircraft PartsMore commonly referred to as the tail, the main role of the empennage is to stabilize the plane during flight. It includes the elevator and rudder, which are used with the ailerons to steer the aircraft.

4. Landing Gear

While it’s not needed during the flight, the landing gear is essential during takeoff and landing. Planes can have either fixed or retractable landing gear, with each style providing its own benefits.

5. Engine

Also called the powerplant, this is the part of the plane that generates forward thrust. It may be a jet engine, which forces air through a turbine; or you may rely on one or more propellers to move forward.
