Although fire departments respond to over 350,000 residential fire incidents in the U.S. each year, the majority of Americans underestimate their home’s risk for fire, according to the Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To help combat fire damage, injury, and deaths across the country, The National Fire Protection Association sponsors a special month of awareness and education every October. Help honor National Fire Prevention Month when you learn more about this serious issue.

The Risk Factors

fire damageCooking equipment remains the most common cause of house fire in the nation, constituting about one in three total accidents. Furnace and HVAC complications are the next most common culprit, followed by people smoking indoors. Faulty electrical equipment, wiring, and candles also cause many accidents at home.

Know What to Do

You can help prevent fire damage and injuries by never leaving the stovetop unattended while cooking and always keeping a close eye on appliances. You should also have your heating and cooling equipment inspected on a routine basis, and clean the air filters out regularly to reduce the risk of fire. Never keep heating equipment near flammable items.

Inspect smoke detectors at least once a month and replace batteries when necessary. In the event of an emergency, you and your family should have an escape strategy. Practice it at least twice a year to remain prepared.

You should also avoid smoking indoors, and never leave an open flame, such as a candle, unattended. If you have children or pets, switch to artificial candles to prevent the risk of accidents. The holiday season poses a particularly high risk of fires due to an increase in cooking and candle and heating equipment use, so take care to protect you and your family.
