Only about 20% of ovarian cancer instances are diagnosed at an early stage, according to the American Cancer Society®. Since ovarian cancer symptoms are often subtle or unnoticeable at the disease’s onset, women may not visit the OB-GYN until the issue exacerbates. To help protect your health, familiarize yourself with four common symptoms to watch out for.

1. Abdominal Bloating

Those with ovarian cancer may notice frequent abdominal bloating unrelated to diet, or other abdominal issues like indigestion and nausea. They may also have a sustained increase in abdominal girth without weight gain.

2. Pelvic or Abdominal Pain

Ovarian cancer is sometimes accompanied by pain in the pelvis or abdomen. Women may also have prolonged pressure in the lower back or pelvis, or generalized discomfort in the area. Some may also experience pain during sex.

3. Appetite Changes

4. Urinary, Bowel, & Menstrual Issues

Ovarian cancer may lead to frequent urination, constipation, or changes in bowel movements.  Other women may experience menstrual changes or vaginal bleeding.

Of course, none of these symptoms mean that someone definitively has ovarian cancer. However, if you’re experiencing any of these issues, you should always talk to your OB-GYN or family doctor about your symptoms. Since ovarian cancer is challenging to detect, regular gynecology checkups serve as the optimal method to identify and combat the condition, which is most common among those over age 55.
