Any HVAC contractor will tell you that a dependable air conditioner requires some routine upkeep throughout the year, even during the fall and winter months when it isn't in regular use. The reasons for maintaining an AC are simple: You want to ensure the unit is functioning optimally when you most need it. Below are a few easy ways to keep your air conditioner in top shape — and maybe even avert the need for an HVAC contractor further down the road.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your AC During the Winter

1. Turn Off the Unit

Shutting down the AC externally will give the unit a rest and keep it securely stored for the winter. Outside, by the AC unit itself, there is typically a small box mounted directly to the home. Inside is a red master switch; flipping it to the "off" position will power down the air conditioner.

2. Clean Off the Unit

HVAC contractorUsing a broom, brush off the air conditioner and wipe it down with a towel. Throughout the winter, get in the habit of doing this about once a week, being aware that you may need to use a shovel as the snow builds up. Keeping the unit clear of debris prevents clogs that could create headaches — and call for the services of an HVAC contractor — when you go to use the AC in the spring.

3. Adjust the Thermostat

This is a good tip for those who don't want to entirely turn off the unit for winter. Most thermostats are programmable, which means you can set them to come on when the interior temperature of a room reaches a certain point. During the winter, you obviously won't have much use for the air conditioner, so program the thermostat to levels at which you know the AC won't turn on. This ensures the unit isn't disrupting the temperature and comfort of the house and is safely out of commission for the season.

By following the above tips, you can take care of your air conditioner and be confident that it will last for years to come.
