3 Preventative Maintenance Tasks You Should Do for Your Water Heater, Boston, Massachusetts

Water heaters are devices that provide hot water for cooking, bathing, and laundry on a daily basis. Like most mechanical systems, they undergo a lot of wear and tear, which is why it is essential to follow a routine maintenance schedule. By following these maintenance tips, you can extend its life span and keep your water heater running efficiently.

3 Ways to Service Your Water Heater

1. Test Your Shutoff Connections

Valve connections tend to fail when you need them the most. That’s why it’s good practice to test your shutoff connections at least once a year. Start by checking the drain pan to make sure it doesn’t contain water. Then, turn off the gas and cold-water valves

2. Check the Anode Rod

water heaterThe anode rod protects the tank of your water heater from rusting inside using electrolysis. Essentially, it corrodes, so the metal lining inside your tank doesn’t. Once it becomes too corroded, it no longer offers protection and needs to be replaced. Check for the anode rod label on the top of your unit and use a wrench to remove the anode rod. If more than two-thirds is corroded, it’s getting time to replace it.

3. Control Sediment Buildup

Over time, sand, minerals, and other debris can settle at the bottom of your water heater’s tank. Large amounts of sediment can cause it to make noises and leak debris into your water. The best way to treat this problem is to drain and flush your tank, removing the buildup.
