When you hire someone to work on your home or office security, you need to trust that they are a professional. While locksmith scams are fairly rare, they do exist as thieves try to gain access to buildings. Fortunately, many reputable businesses are also out there, and finding one just takes a bit of know-how. Look for a handful of characteristics as you research your options.

Qualities of a Legitimate Locksmith

1. Billing Practices

When you request an estimate from a locksmith, ask for it in writing. A professional will not balk at this request, while a scammer often will. When they send you the estimate, check that it has been sent on an official letterhead, rather than through a text or scribbled in someone’s handwriting.

Ask how they prefer you pay; scammers will often request that you pay only in cash. A professional accepts other forms of payment, such as credit cards and checks, so ask about this even if you are willing to pay cash.

2. Licensing & Accreditation

locksmithThe state of New Jersey requires that locksmiths are licensed with the state. A legal contractor will carry their license with them for work, so they should be able to produce it for you upon request. You can also ask about their accreditation and memberships of professional organizations, which is not required but can tell you that they are a true professional.

3. Upfront & Consistent Quoting

Scammers often provide a low quote over the phone, then add on charges when the locksmith arrives by claiming the job is more complicated than they originally thought. Beware of extremely low prices; if it seems too good to be true, it likely is. Instead, they should be upfront about their pricing and any additional fees they might charge, such as mileage or parts. Whatever they charge, it should match the original quote provided.
