Losing a loved one is never an easy experience. However, delivering a heartfelt eulogy is a wonderful way to participate in the funeral service and honor the life of the deceased. Whether you intend to help someone prepare their remarks or will deliver a speech yourself, there are a few things you can do to help make a meaningful tribute.

How to Prepare a Funeral Eulogy

1. Make Sure the Speakers Are Comfortable

Nearly anyone can give remarks at a funeral, including clergy, friends, relatives, and funeral conductors. However, if you are approaching a friend or family member about delivering a eulogy, make sure they are comfortable with the task. Writing the speech can be an emotionally overwhelming process, so give them the opportunity to decline if it’ll be too difficult for them.

2. Collect Appropriate Information

funeralThe eulogy should be personal and relate directly to the deceased. You can gather information about their likes, childhood, special accomplishments, family life, and unique characteristics to help make your speech detailed and memorable. Consider speaking to their family, friends, and ex-coworkers to learn more about the deceased if you are unsure what to write about.

3. Choose a Theme

Your eulogy doesn’t have to be rigidly structured, but having a central theme will help you to remain focused. You may choose a chronological narrative starting with the early childhood of your deceased loved one, or you can deliver a personal outlook on their lives. You may even want to discuss some of their favorite poems or music.

4. Write a Rough Draft

Since giving a eulogy at a funeral can be emotional, it’s best to write out your thoughts before the event. This way, you can prepare a respectful, concise speech. Begin your draft by introducing yourself and acknowledging the honor of speaking at your beloved’s funeral. Then discuss the deceased based on the theme you chose. Focus on their life, their accomplishments, and their legacy. End the draft with a short, uplifting conclusion.
