Machining can be a complex process, especially when it comes to CNC machines and how they operate. CNC stands for “computer numerical control”, which means that a programmed computer—not a manually-operated control—determines the movements of whatever machinery or tools are in use. Below is a brief introduction to some common CNC machines and what they do.

CNC Machines

In all CNC machining, a computer tells the tool what to do via a specific set of pre-programmed sequences. Some of the more common tools utilized include:

  • CNC machineMills: A CNC milling machine can perform cuts on any number of materials. The computer moves the blades, cutters, and other implements of the mill to the desired area and performs the cut. These types of mills are often the tools most associated with CNC machining.
  • Lathes: CNC lathes operate by spinning a material at high rates of speed before a computer-controlled drill makes small and exact cuts in specific places. To prevent heat buildup, the lathe emits water onto the cutting surface as the cut is being made. A CNC lathe is a more high-tech version of the manual lathe, which has been around for centuries.
  • Plasma Cutters: A plasma cutter melts metal instead of using a tool to cut or shape it, creating smooth edges and a sleek final product.

Machining Processes

CNC machines can handle a number of tasks. Because of the sophistication of the machinery, what previously took significant time and attention can be accomplished relatively quickly. Machining processes include:

  • Turning: Material is spun at high speeds while a lathe performs cuts.
  • Milling & Drilling: Material is held still while a cut is made.
