A car title is an extremely important document that proves legal ownership of a vehicle. When buying a car or truck, you’ll have to go through a legal process of transferring the title into your name and ensuring all the information it contains is correct. Having a complete, legal title is required to register a vehicle or use it as collateral for a loan.

What You Should Know About Car Titles

What Information The Title Contains

car titleThe car title contains detailed information identifying the vehicle, including the make, model, and the unique VIN. The VIN, or vehicle identification number, is a 17-digit number usually found on the dashboard and door jamb of the car. The title should also contain the odometer reading at the time of the last transfer as well as the name and address of the current owner. If you purchased a vehicle with an auto loan, the lender will retain the title until the car is paid off.

Transferring Title

Each state has different procedures for transferring ownership of a vehicle. In some jurisdictions, buyers and sellers will just have to sign the document. However, Louisiana and many other states require both buyers and sellers to appear before a notary to verify their identities before title can be transferred. However, if you’re purchasing a vehicle from an out-of-state seller in a jurisdiction that doesn’t require notarization, the notarization requirement may be waived.
