If you’ve recently installed your ceiling fan in the bedroom, you might feel triumphant until you realize you need to address the corresponding electrical switch and the box that houses it. Many homeowners undergoing a do-it-yourself electrical wiring project such as this will be faced with a major decision — should you use a plastic electrical box or metal one? An electrician will understand and explain the pros and cons of each type to make your decision simple.

A Helpful Guide to Electrical Boxes

Plastic Electrical Box

electricianPlastic boxes are not only less expensive, but they also don’t need to be grounded upon application. For those reasons, most residential wiring projects are a good fit with plastic boxes. Most electricians also prefer plastic boxes because they are easier and faster to install. Plastic boxes are the preferred choice for Romex® or NM wiring. They come with mounting nails already built into their structure and feature break-out tabs for inserting cables. Plastic boxes are also easier to handle with less risk of getting cut.

Metal Electrical Box

For years, electricians only had the option of using metal boxes, and some situations still require them. For example, they should always be used with BX wiring and are also compatible with Romex wiring. If safety is your biggest concern, metal boxes are fireproof and durable and don’t melt the way plastic ones sometimes can. However, they’re more challenging to install — even for licensed electricians — and can leave your fingers with nicks and cuts.
