Winter weather can have a devastating effect on your best pair of cowboy boots. Because of the cold dry air, snow, and slush, the leather suffers excess wear and tear as well as damage and staining from rock salt and sand. Knowing how to care for your boots will help them stay in top shape no matter the weather. Here are five tips to try this winter season.

How to Keep Cowboy Boots in Top Shape in Cold Weather

1. Cleaner

Always remove grime, salt, and other debris as soon as you can so stains don’t set in. With a soft cloth, mix equal parts white vinegar and water and gently rub away unsightly marks. When your shoes are completely dry, wipe them down once more with a fresh clean cloth. You can also use saddle soap or a quality leather cleaner since it is designed to remove dirt specifically from leather.

Conditioner brings worn leather back to life and remedies excessive scuffing. Conditioners also stop leather from fading or cracking in weak areas. Before applying, make sure grime is removed, and always use a clean, soft cloth. After the conditioner has set, gently buff your boots with a soft brush. We recommend Bick 4 Conditioner for quality leathers. But remember, there are special leathers like Distressed leather that need a special conditioner. Please contact us for further details.

3. Mink Oil

Any cowboy boot owner should have mink oil in their care arsenal. Regular applications stop leather from drying out, an especially useful quality when cold air is blowing. Polishing with mink oil and a clean cloth also removes dirt and salt while keeping the material supple. remember that mink and other oils may darken the leather.

4. Moisture Barrier

Before traipsing in the snow with your cowboy boots, add water and stain protector to the leather. These repellents are a preventive measure so your boots don’t suffer damage in snow and rain as well as the salt used to melt ice and slush. Make sure boots are clean and dry before spraying. Gard More by Bickmore is a good choice.

5. Proper Storage

Boots, especially those that have been saturated, should be stored in a clean, warm area. Avoid placing them too close to a heat source though since high temperatures can lead to brittle leather and cracking. Let your cowboy boots breathe. Never place them in bags or sealed containers, especially if they are still damp and dirty.

6. Work Boots

Work boots come in many types of leather and we have many quality cleaners, conditioners and waterproofing products to meet your needs.
