Modern technology and advanced dentistry techniques have made visiting the dentist more comfortable than ever. Some children, however, still experience anxiety, whether they’re getting a cleaning or visiting the emergency children’s dentist. In situations like these, the dentist can offer mild sedation to put your child at ease, but it’s helpful if parents take a few steps to prepare their child.

How to Prepare Your Child for Sedation in Advance

When you’ve scheduled an appointment in advance, you can prepare your child mentally and emotionally by explaining to them what to expect using positive language. Ask your pediatric dentist to explain the procedure to you, so you can answer your child’s questions. Explain that sedation is safe and will help them relax while the dentist takes care of their teeth.

Light food and milk can be consumed until six hours in advance, while clear liquids like water and juice are fine up until two hours prior. Two hours before the appointment, avoid letting your child eat or drink. If you can, choose loose clothes for your child to allow for the placement of monitoring equipment and help your child feel more comfortable.

How to Handle an Emergency Children’s Dentist Visit

Sometimes, you don’t have advanced notice that your child is going to the dentist. If your child has an oral injury and you need to visit the emergency children’s dentist, it’s important to stay calm. You may not have time to restrict foods and put your child in loose clothing, but you should come prepared to provide a list of your child’s medications and medical history.
