The cooler weather will soon arrive, which means homeowners should take precautions to protect their plumbing systems. Ice storms can still occur in southern Texas, and winterizing your pipes prevents leaks and bursting. Following a few tips will help you avoid an emergency call to the plumber this season.

How to Get Your Plumbing System Ready for Winter

1. Repair Exterior Cracks

If there are cracks in the home’s foundation or along the walls and ceilings, this will allow cold air to move inside. As a result, the water inside pipes can freeze during cold Texas nights in January and February, which can increase the pressure and eventually cause them to burst. Before winter arrives, inspect for cracks and fill them in with caulk or spray foam.

2. Insulate the Pipes

plumberInsulation reduces condensation and prevents the pipes from freezing. Insulation sleeves, which are made from fiberglass or polyethylene, are commonly used. As an extra preventative measure, plumbers recommend wrapping pipes in heat tape, a material used to raise the temperature of the pipes and reduce the risk of freezing.

3. Open the Cabinets

Leave all of the vanity and cabinet doors beneath the sinks open. This allows the warm indoor air to reach the pipes. If there isn’t enough warmth in these areas, add a space heater on days that are below freezing. However, to mitigate fire risks, never leave space heaters unattended, in an enclosed area, or near flammable materials like toilet paper and towels.
