Funerals are time to remember the life of a loved one who has passed. Services are difficult and sensitive affairs, so it’s important to respect your friends and family member’s feelings and follow the basic rules of etiquette to show compassion. Below are some do’s and don’ts of dress and conduct.

Do:

Pay your respects.

It’s common to feel at a loss about what to say to the bereaved. Don’t worry about saying the “right” thing, as long as you convey your sympathies sincerely. Offer your heartfelt condolences and let friends and family members know you’re available to talk and lend support.

Dress conservatively.

Greenwich, CT funeralAvoid wearing anything garish or eye-catching to a funeral or a memorial service. It’s customary to wear a dark color, such as navy or black. For men, a suit jacket, button-down shirt, and pants are appropriate. Women can wear suits or simple dresses and jackets. In general, all attendees should avoid bright colors.

Don’t:

Show up late.

Arrive on time—ideally at least 10 or 15 minutes in advance to avoid disrupting the service. If you do happen to reach the funeral home a little late, enter through the back or side door. Remain standing in the back or take a seat in the nearest empty chair if someone is speaking.

Use your phone.

Never use your phone during the service, as it is distracting and inconsiderate to others. Doing so is also disrespectful and shows a lack of empathy and gravity toward the situation. Switch it off or set it to silent. If you need to make a call, step outside only between speeches.
