The stomach is a primary organ of digestion with powerful acids that break down foods. The stomach is lined with a thick layer of protective mucus, but if that becomes compromised, an ulcer can form when acids eat away at the stomach wall. Ulcers can be treated and healed, but if left untreated, they can become severe or even life-threatening. If you have any of the following signs, visit your doctor or family clinic

What Are the Signs of a Stomach Ulcer?

1. Pain in the Stomach

Pain will vary with the severity of the ulcer, but it is the most common symptom. The pain is usually felt in the abdomen, between the chest and belly button. It can be severe and burning or dull and achy. Pain most commonly occurs when the stomach is empty, but eating certain foods—spicy or acidic, for example—can trigger pain as well. Visit your family clinic if you have chronic stomach pain. Untreated ulcers can lead to life-threatening bleeding and damage to other organs and increase the risk for stomach cancer.

2. Anemia

If the ulcer has reached the bleeding stage, anemia can be a side effect that will accompany other symptoms. Bleeding ulcers are serious and can become life-threatening, so it’s important to see a doctor to determine the cause and get immediate treatment.

3. Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, heartburn, bloating, and constant burping are also symptoms of an ulcer. If you experience these conditions regularly, see a doctor to determine the exact cause. Constant use of antacids or over-the-counter acid reflux medicines may help the pain, but they are not a viable long-term treatment for ulcers.

4. Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are also common symptoms. Vomit that looks like coffee grounds is a very specific warning sign, and you should visit a family clinic immediately. If you have dark or tarry stools, this is another indication that an ulcer may be present.
