Hearing aids were once available by prescription only following assessments by licensed audiologists. In August of 2017, a congressional bill was passed to allow drug and retail stores to sell hearing devices over the counter. These aids do not provide a custom fit but can help those experiencing hearing loss.

What Should You Know About OTC Hearing Aids?

Sound Amplification

At this time, OTC hearing aids provide the most benefits for those with mild hearing loss. They function as a precursor to Personal Sound Amplification Products — or PSAPs — prescribed by audiologists. The devices amplify sounds but do not make up for hearing loss.

FDA Review

hearing aidsAs of 2017, it will take the FDA an estimated three years to review these products and develop guidelines. PSAP devices are not under FDA jurisdiction because they are prescribed by trained, licensed professionals.

Affordability

The idea behind the Over-The-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 is to make these devices more affordable. Organizations such as the Hearing Loss Association of America has pushed to make aids available “to everyone” for some time.

Professional Visits

Instead of using the Internet for self-diagnosis purposes, make an appointment with your local audiologist. Your issue may be due to excessive earwax buildup or another condition that can cause problems from placing an instrument in your ear, such as a perforated eardrum. Even if you do not want to be fitted for custom devices, you will still know the degree of hearing loss you are currently experiencing and which aids provide the most benefits.

Your audiologist will also let you know if your issue is potentially due to a larger health issue so you can see a physician or other specialist as soon as possible.
