Concrete stairs are a useful addition to any home. They look great, are low maintenance, and hold up well in practically all climates. The main consideration for most homeowners is deciding whether to choose poured-in-place or precast concrete. If the decision comes down to cost, then the latter option is the clear winner as the guide below explains.

Precast Concrete Stairs

Like all precast concrete, these stairs are molded at a factory and then delivered to the job site. They are designed to be hollow, which makes them much easier to transport and lift. It results in a far less labor-intensive project, which is why they are the more affordable option. The only other material needed is a footing, unless the staircase is very large. In this situation, lifting equipment is also required.

Poured-in-Place Stairs

Poured-in-place stairs are typically about three times more expensive than precast because they require more labor. First, concrete is poured to create a footing. Then, removable forms are built to mold the rest of the steps. Also, unless the project is very small, a truck will have to mix the concrete on site. Once the project is completed, the stairs will not be usable for a few days to let the material cure.

While they are pricier, poured stairs have their benefits. They are incredibly sturdy and easy to connect and repair. Also, if measurements are off, adjustments can be made on site.
