You’ve probably heard your dentist talk about the importance of brushing your teeth, but one topic discussed less frequently in the world of dental care is proper toothbrush storage. Like most people, you probably already have a designated spot for your toothbrush, but could your storage practices be exposing you to harmful germs? Discover what the pros recommend for keeping this dental care tool in top condition.

How to Achieve Safe & Sanitary Toothbrush Storage Your Dentist Would Approve Of

1. Avoid Case or Drawer Storage

Some people fall under the assumption that enclosing their toothbrush in a case or drawer will help keep germs at bay. In reality, the opposite is true. Keeping moist bristles in a dark, enclosed area will only allow potentially harmful bacteria to thrive. Although it can be tempting to tuck it away out of sight, it’s best to give your brush some real estate on your bathroom counter instead.

2. Rinse First Then Store Upright

Once you’ve finished brushing, take a few extra seconds to rinse your brush thoroughly. Doing so will eradicate any lingering food particles or toothpaste. Next, place your brush upright with the bristle side up in a cup or similar container to allow it to dry. Every couple of weeks, sanitize your toothbrush holder by washing it thoroughly with soap and water and turning it upside-down to dry completely.

3. Replace Toothbrushes Regularly

dentistEven when you follow good storage practices, toothbrushes should still be swapped out at regular intervals. After three to four months, brushes become frayed or worn and can lose their effectiveness. You should also consider replacement if you’ve recently been sick or received treatment for gum disease to avoid repeated exposure to germs.
