Before you head in for any doctor’s appointment, it’s best to know what to expect. This will help the appointment go more smoothly, as you’re prepared with the necessary information and won’t face any surprises. Read this guide to learn what to expect when you go in for your first appointment with the audiologist.

What to Expect at Your First Audiologist Appointment

Review Medical History & Needs

The typical introductory appointment will take about 30 to 45 minutes. Come prepared with your medical history and insurance information. The receptionist will have you fill out some intake forms, which will ask you questions about your health background and hearing problems that run in your family. They’ll also ask about medications you take and past surgeries. They ask you if there’s any specific hearing or ear-related problems that you’re concerned about. If you do have concerns, try to describe when they occur and why it bothers you.

Conduct Tests & Discuss Recommendations

audiologistYour testing will start with a visual inspection of your ears with a handheld otoscope. This allows your audiologist to find exterior abnormalities or conditions that would affect your hearing.

They’ll then conduct the hearing test, which may include a few different tests. A tone test involves playing tones into your ear to determine what you can hear. A speech recognition test requires you to repeat words or sentences at different noise levels. All your results are recorded on a piece of paper called an audiogram, which your doctor will discuss with you. They may make recommendations for your treatment — which they can handle — or will refer you to a specialist for further testing and treatment.
