Working with a low-quality product affects the project outcome and results in premature maintenance—paint is no exception. Whether yours is an interior or exterior painting project, you want your chosen product to last instead of flaking or bubbling. Learn how to determine quality paint from everything else to streamline your commercial or residential project.

What Indicates Quality Paint?

1. Brand Name & Price

The brand name and price usually indicate paint quality. Most products and services worth investing in cost more, with excellent brands remaining in the public consciousness. While it is still possible to pay for a known product that does not hold up, use the brand name and price as a starting point during your quality paint search.

2. Titanium Dioxide Pigments

Look for high percentages of this expensive, pure white powder as you browse, as it features fantastic “hiding” qualities that result in fewer paint applications to achieve the desired result. Other pigments such as silica and talc do not offer this benefit.

3. Superior Resins

Resins, or binders, help paint adhere to and penetrate a surface to avoid flaking and peeling issues. Find options with 100% acrylic rather than vinyl acrylic resins to ensure efficient curing times.

4. Less Water Content

Low-quality paints contain high amounts of water that result in adhesion, durability, and hiding issues. Find products with greater solid content such as 45% solid by volume for quick and easy application instead of having to paint layer upon layer.

5. Smooth Feel

How the paint feels also indicates its quality level. Rub a little bit of the product between your fingers as your final test—if it feels smooth, you can move forward with your purchase. If the product feels gritty, look for something else.
