Shipping services are convenient for moving products quickly across large distances, transferring belongings to a new home, or sending gifts to loved ones. But this process can be rough on some items, particularly electronics. To protect their delicate components and glass screens, you need to pack properly before shipping them anywhere.

5 Tips for Packing Electronics

1. Use Original Packages

The method of choice for shipping any electronic item is to use the original packaging from the manufacturer. These boxes and containers are specifically designed to cushion the item during transit. Only use other methods if you don’t have access to the original packaging.

2. Backup Before Shipping

If your computer, phone, or other device has any important data on it, create a copy on another device or hosting service before shipping the item. This way, even if an accident happens and the product is severely damaged, you can recover the files.

3. Unplug Early

ShippingMany electronics and appliances need time to cool down before they ship. For example, you don’t want to wrap up a hot computer in insulating packaging because it will increase the risk of heat damage during shipping. Unplug your item and power it down at least 24 hours before you pack it up to make sure it’s fully cooled.

4. Remove Parts

If your item has batteries or other removable parts or accessories, take them out and wrap them separately. This will prevent parts from rattling around or breaking off during shipping.

5. Double Pack

Whatever amount of material you would ordinarily use to ship your item, double it. Put your packed box inside an additional box with more bubble wrap. This makes it even harder to damage, with twice the rigidity and resilience.
