As the weather gets colder, many animals, including rodents and certain insects, will begin searching for shelter indoors. In some cases, they may make their way into your home. Fortunately, infestations are preventable. Here are four fall pest control tips to keep unwanted guests at bay.

4 Tips for Autumn Pest Control

1. Seal Points of Entry

Pests often sneak into your home through cracks, gaps, and other minor entry points. You can block access by inspecting your doors, windows, and exterior and sealing any gaps and holes. Check for holes in pantries and cupboards where food is stored as well. Sealing drafty areas has the added benefit of improving insulation.

2. Remove the Food Supply

Bring pet food dishes inside and clean up crumbs and spills immediately. Seal foods in airtight containers in the pantry and don’t leave items out in the open. Some pests, including cockroaches, feed on waste, so take out the trash regularly as well.

3. Clean the Yard

Many pests nest outside and come in for food. Clear the area around your home of clutter and debris, including piles of leaves and twigs. Also, trim thick shrubs and trees around your property to reduce brush accumulation. Keep firewood stored at least 20 feet away from your house or in a secure shed.

4. Inspect the Chimney

The chimney provides an access point for several critters, including birds, bats, rodents, and raccoons. Check your chimney to ensure it’s clear of nests or animals before you use the fireplace. Also, install a chimney cap to keep pests from entering in the first place.
