The demands of traveling can be challenging for people with debilitating conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease. Yet, with some careful planning, it becomes possible to enjoy new locations with minimal issues. If you or a loved one has Parkinson’s, here are a few tips to prepare for your next getaway.

How to Travel With Someone With Parkinson’s Disease

1. Notify Transportation Services

From airlines to buses and trains, transportation may be made more convenient if you contact the service in advance. The airline, for instance, may offer early seating to provide ample time for comfortable boarding.

2. Book Hotel Rooms Strategically

If you require a handicap-accessible hotel room, indicate this when you book the reservation. Even if you don’t use a wheelchair, consider selecting a room on the first floor for convenient access upon checking in and after long days of exploring.

3. Double-Check the Medications

4. Simplify Sightseeing

Whether you’re walking to the beach or adventuring through a different city, make getting around as simple as possible by choosing a hands-free pack for your medication, phone, wallet, and any other personal items. Wear clothing with plenty of pockets and comfortable shoes.

5. Avoid a Packed Itinerary

To avoid feeling fatigued or stressed on vacation, include some downtime in the itinerary. Giving yourself some rest in between checking out all the must-see items will let you maximize your enjoyment.
