Raising awareness about breast care exams can save lives. Cancers found during routine screenings tend to be smaller and will likely still be confined to the breast tissues, making them easier to treat and allowing for a better prognosis. With October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, now’s the perfect time to share information about the importance of regular mammograms. Here’s five ways to spread the word.

5 Ways to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

1. Throw a Pink Party Fundraiser

Gather your friends, family, and colleagues for a pink-themed party. You can incorporate the Pink Ribbon—the international symbol for the fight against breast cancer—into everything from the decorations to the food. Hold a silent auction or raffle to raise money for a relevant charity. You can ask local companies to contribute items for the cause.

2. Wear the Ribbon

Make a commitment to wear the Pink Ribbon throughout the month of October. Carry information in your car or bag wherever you go—the CDC have these useful one-pagers you can print out. You never know who might ask you about the ribbon and its meaning, giving you a chance to share valuable information.

3. Participate in a Run

4. Share on Social Media

Take a break from memes and post valuable information on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media accounts. The Department of Health and Human Services has ready-made snippets of information you can tweet directly—check it out here.

5. Talk to Your Loved Ones

Your actions for Breast Cancer Awareness Month don’t need to be huge to make a difference. It’s enough to just take the time to talk to your friends and family and ask when they got their most recent breast care exam. A single conversation could be life-saving.
