A side-by-side, also known as a utility task vehicle (UTV), is a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle that seats two to six people and can carry up to 1,300 pounds above the operator's weight. It gets its name from its side-by-side seating arrangement—as opposed to the front-to-back arrangement of many all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). It is normally used for work instead of pleasure. Because UTVs are not permitted on public roads, side-by-side insurance, unlike auto insurance, is not required by state law at this time. However, it is an important risk management tool that protects the owner, operator, and passengers from financial risk.

What Does Side-by-Side Insurance Cover?

Liability

auto insuranceA side-by-side insurance policy provides coverage similar to auto insurance, which includes liability. If you or an employee accidentally injures someone or damages their property while operating the UTV, your insurance policy pays for medical treatment and repair costs. It also covers legal costs arising out of the incident, such as lawyer fees and judgment amounts.

Collision

Liability only covers other people's property, so you will need collision coverage to protect your UTV from damage during an accident. If something happens to the vehicle while it is moving, this type of coverage will alleviate the cost of repairs.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive coverage guards against non-collision events, like a fire, flood, vandalism, or theft. It is essential even during off-seasons when the vehicle is stored. Like with auto insurance, full coverage is an informal term that refers to a policy that combines both collision and comprehensive coverage.

Accessory Coverage

You may need special coverage for any accessories your UTV possesses beyond the stock model. This could cost an additional amount. For instance, it could cost extra to insure a plow, windshield, cab system, or storage rack, depending on the insurer and the vehicle model.
