Tractor trailers play a significant role in the economy, but because of their power and size, they pose a higher risk to property and people if they are involved in serious traffic accidents. For this reason, it’s important to make sure they are properly maintained and kept in good working condition. However, no matter how well a semitruck is taken care of, its performance can be negatively affected by the way it’s driven. There are several mistakes truck drivers can make that may result in poor efficiency and the premature wearing and breakdown of truck parts. Avoid common bad driving habits to reduce wear and tear to your tractor trailer.

Driving Behaviors Semitruck Drivers Should Avoid

1. Speeding

When large trucks are operated at a higher rate of speed, their fuel efficiency decreases. Therefore, speeding has the potential to cost fleet owners a substantial amount of money. It’s recommended that drivers set their speed at 60, 65, or 68 miles per hour, depending on the speed limit, to save on fuel expenses and promote safer roadways.

2. Excessive Idling

This is why there are laws and regulations in place prohibiting truck drivers from letting their engines idle for excessive periods of time. If a truck must be stopped for longer than guidelines allow, drivers should utilize a generator or auxiliary power unit.

3. Hard Braking

Suddenly slamming on the brake pedal in an effort to stop at a red light or stop sign or to avoid an accident puts quite a bit of wear on the brakes. In some cases, hard braking may be unavoidable, but it shouldn’t be normal practice. Brakes will last much longer if drivers remain aware of their surroundings and start braking early so there is plenty of time for the truck to come to a smooth stop.

4. Driving Over Potholes

Semitruck drivers should steer clear of any damages in the road, such as potholes. These hazards can wreak havoc on truck parts, damaging the suspension, engine, and exhaust systems, causing misaligned steering, and puncturing the tires. Staying focused on what’s ahead will give drivers enough time to detect a road hazard and change lanes or reduce speed as necessary to keep from driving over it.
