If you work in a shopping center or live in an apartment complex, the primary trash receptacle is probably a front-load dumpster. Thanks to its wide flip-top, it makes it easy to throw away trash. Even though it’s designed for easy disposal, not everything can be thrown away. Unless otherwise noted, there are some basic restrictions. For the general public’s safety, take notes of the following.

5 Items You Shouldn’t Dispose of in a Front-Load Dumpster

1. Batteries

Used to power small, handheld devices like remotes and video game controllers, alkaline batteries are ubiquitous in most homes. Unfortunately, unless they’re rechargeable, they’ll need be replaced. When that happens, take the used ones to a recycling center. Over time, the deteriorating metals can negatively impact the environment if left in a trash bag to decompose.

2. Appliances & Electronics

3. Paints, Oils & Stains

Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a weekend warrior, you probably have a generous collection of paints, oils, lacquers, stains, and sealants for your projects. Just like the previously mentioned, they can negatively affect nature when simply tossed away. If they’re still usable, donate them but if not, take them to a recycling center.

4. Medications

Whether it’s over-the-counter or it’s been specifically prescribed to you or someone in your family, medications should never be thrown in the trash or flushed down the toilet. As they break down, they can contaminate the soil, water, and wildlife. Some hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies allow you to return unused medications for disposal, but not all accept open bottles, so inquire first.

5. Tires

Unlike the aforementioned, tires aren’t particularly hazardous when improperly disposed of. However, they are being wasted. The rubber can be shredded and repurposed into many different things, such as mulch, playground flooring, and aggregate for asphalt.
