Zooming down the highway at 60 to 70 miles per hour would be terrifying without brakes to stop your vehicle from getting out of control. However, these parts will eventually need repair or replacing if you want to continue to ride safely. Below are some tell-tale signs that you are due for a brake service

How to Tell When You Need Brake Service

1. Odd Noises

Many times, your car will notify you if something is wrong, either with a dashboard warning or by making a loud, annoying sound. If your brakes are squealing, squeaking, or grinding whenever you use them, they need attention. The last one, in particular, should get your attention because it usually indicates the brake pads have completely worn through. This means the metal calipers and metal rotors are now rubbing against one another and will possibly need to be replaced as well.

2. Sinking Brake Pedal

If they’re touching the mat or the pedal feels soft, you need to schedule immediate brake service. This could be an issue with the master cylinder or point to air or moisture in the brake lines.

3. Shaking or Vibrating Steering Wheel

If you notice a shaking or vibration coming out of your steering wheel each time you hit your brakes, you could have one or more issues. Common causes include an uneven rotor surface, sticky pistons that prevent the calipers—which house the brake pads—from releasing fully, or damage to the brake components due to improper installation.
