Whether you have a swinging or a sliding patio screen door, you likely know that they can attract dirt and grime. And because of the fine mesh of the screen, you might assume they would be difficult to clean and maintain, but, in reality, a little elbow grease is all that's needed to keep a screen door looking its best. Below are three tips to help guide you through the process of cleaning a swinging or patio screen door.

3 Pointers for Cleaning a Screen Door

1. Vacuum First

Removing the screen and laying it on a tarp or clean sheet will ensure you can get into all the nooks and crannies. Using a handheld vacuum or a vacuum attachment on the lowest suction setting, gently remove as much visible dirt and debris as you can. Be sure to get into the corners, and work gingerly to avoid putting too much suction pressure on the fine mesh. This step eliminates larger pieces of dirt and will make the rest of the process considerably easier.

2. Use the Manufacturer's Recommended Cleaner

patio screenManufacturers know the products that will work most effectively to clean their doors. Check the information that came with your swinging or patio screen door, or, if that's not an option, contact the manufacturer directly and ask which cleaner you should use. Apply the cleaner or water-based solution by gently scrubbing with a sponge or microfiber cloth while holding the screen upright.

3. Rinse the Screen

Use a hose to rinse the screen off, and set the water spray to a lighter setting to avoid damaging the mesh. Be as thorough as possible to remove all traces of the cleaning solution. Immediately after the rinse, carefully towel off the screen to soak up the water, then stand the screen upright to dry. It will take several hours to dry completely, and you can then install your sanitized screen door in its rightful place.
