A healthy diet is important for your overall wellbeing. As any dentist will tell you, what you eat and drink impacts your smile. Certain foods and beverages pose an especial threat to your enamel, the protective covering of your teeth. When this wears away, you are at greater risk for cavities, as decay can spread more rapidly to the dentin—the inner part of the tooth—and the root.

5 Enamel-Damaging Foods & Drinks

1. Candy

Candies are full of sugar, which creates sticky plaque and attracts bacteria—a surefire recipe for cavities. Hard candies pose an added threat if you chew on them, which can damage the enamel of your teeth. In extreme cases, you might even chip a tooth.

2. Citrus

dentistWhile citrus does have its health benefits because of a high vitamin C content, it’s also very acidic. When the pH in your mouth becomes overly acidic, enamel wears down. If you eat citrus, alternate your bites with sips of water to dilute the acid. Wait 20 minutes after consuming citrus and then brush your teeth; the enamel will be especially weakened after acid exposure, so brushing directly after can cause damage.

3. Soda

Soda poses a double threat, as it is loaded with sugar—attracting bacteria—and tends to be highly acidic. As with citrus, this acid damages enamel. Opt for plain water or non-sugary fruit juices instead.

4. Coffee & Tea

Caffeinated coffees and teas have a dehydrating effect that dries out your mouth. Saliva acts as a natural cleaning agent, washing away debris and bacteria, and also balances the pH in your mouth. Dry mouth can thus increase your risk of cavities. Add milk to these drinks to balance the pH and skip the sugar. Chewing sugar-free gum can also spur saliva production.

5. Sticky Foods

Sticky items, like gummy bears, dried fruits, or caramels are hard to clean off teeth afterward. They thus tend to stay on your teeth longer than other types of foods, attracting bacteria. Make sure to brush and floss thoroughly after consuming these foods.
