While windows provide fresh air and a view of the outdoors, they can also present safety risks to young children if they’re unsecured. Fortunately, vigilant parents can take steps to childproof their windows and prevent an accident. These cost-effective ideas will make your home safer for the whole family.

Simple Window Safety Tips for Parents

1. Attach Stops

You’d be surprised at how easily persistent kids can open windows. Whether yours move sideways or up and down, adding stops will limit how far they open. Stops come in two styles: one that screws into the frame and one that sticks to the glass with a suction cup. Both products work on a variety of fixtures, including double-hung windows and glass doors.

2. Add Locks

These are difficult for children to open and can be placed out of reach to minimize temptation. For added safety, install key locks that can’t be pried open. If you’re concerned that your child will figure out how to undo the lock, add stops as a backup safety measure. Some models also have a built-in ventilation option to let fresh air into the house without opening the window all the way.

3. Install Guards

If you want to open the windows completely to maximize fresh air, then you’ll need metal guards. Traditional screens are enough to keep bugs out and pets in, but they’re no match for mobile children who have learned to push. Guards are difficult for kids to move but can be taken out by an adult during an emergency. Ask your window and glass contractor to install this device to ensure it is as secure as possible.
