Whether you need a new driveway or have another residential paving project in mind, it’s important to schedule service at the right time of the year. Asphalt paving during the wrong season can result in delays and higher service costs. Protect yourself from these headaches by learning the ideal time to hire a residential paving company.

Late Spring or Early Summer

Streamline your residential paving project by scheduling service in the late spring or early summer. Asphalt paving works best when the temperature is about 55 to 70 degrees or higher because it delays the material’s cooling time for smooth and even distribution. Asphalt that cools too soon becomes clumpy and bumpy and must be torn up and re-paved. Too-cool temperatures can also create seam issues. Rather than putting more money into your residential paving project than necessary, review the weather forecast in advance and schedule service when temperatures are higher.

Cold Weather

Discuss your options with your contractor if temperatures drop below 50 unexpectedly. They will need to mix the product between 290 and 330 degrees using a heated screed for additional temperature control. Temperatures exceeding 330 degrees can damage the asphalt.

Your contractors will also need to adjust the product’s thickness if they need to pave in cooler temperatures. Asphalt mat thickness of about 1 inch works well during the spring and summer; however, thickness increases anywhere from 3 to 8 inches in cold weather. If the temperature is 40 degrees, for example, asphalt must be between 2.1 and 3 inches. Temperatures in the low 30s require thickness of about 8 inches. Overly thin asphalt poured in cold weather cools too soon for proper distribution and compaction.
