When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, it's important to understand that you have options. The type of dental work you ultimately choose will have a lot to do with the type of dental issue you're dealing with, as well as any cost concerns and the desired look for the finished product. Consider the differences between three key types of cosmetic dentistry procedures, inlays, onlays, and crowns, before making your decision with your dentist.

Inlays

cosmetic dentistryAn inlay is a single piece of material, usually gold or ceramic, that is fitted onto a cavity and held in place with cement. It creates a strong and durable layer of protection for the damaged tooth. Of the three types of cosmetic dentistry discussed here, inlays are the least common; this is likely because of cost and the fact that many dental insurance plans don't cover them. An inlay is ideal, however, for a cavity that is simply too large or deep for a dental filling.

Onlays

An onlay is just what its name implies. While an inlay sits in the tooth, an onlay sits on the tooth's cusp. Like an inlay, though, it is fashioned from a single piece of material, does not encompass the entire biting surface of the tooth, and is best for situations where a cavity is too large for a traditional filling. In general, the process of implementing an onlay is easier on the tooth, and many dentists prefer onlays because less of the tooth has to be removed. Because of this, the procedure is usually cheaper for the patient.

Crowns

A dental crown is essentially a cap that is fitted and placed over the entire damaged tooth. Crowns are often reserved for the most serious types of cavities that have caused extensive damage to the tooth and its integrity. A crown can be fabricated from any number of durable substances, including stainless steel and ceramic. Of crowns, inlays, and onlays, crowns are the most widely performed, mainly because most insurance plans cover them.
