For individuals with mobility challenges, two of the most popular options for moving about in and outside the home are power wheelchairs and electric scooters. While the primary function of the two is similar, each option has unique characteristics. Discover which is right for you with the following guide.

Power Wheelchairs

Power wheelchairs, also referred to as electric wheelchairs, are propelled by electric motors with rechargeable batteries. They are a convenient alternative to manual wheelchairs. For people living independently or anyone who has compromised use of their hands, electric wheelchairs are especially advantageous. They can cover long distances and various types of terrain, and many are collapsible for convenient storage and transportation.

Mobility Scooters

Mobility scooters have a front handle and therefore require the use of hands for operation. Sometimes longer than power wheelchairs, they are also powered by rechargeable batteries. Scooters are typically cheaper than power wheelchairs but not as maneuverable. Scooters have a larger turning radius than power wheelchairs and can operate at higher speeds than most power wheelchairs.  There are many sizes to choose from; small little folding models or travel scooters that come apart are popular with customers that want something portable and light. Larger scooters have more range and power but are heavier and less portable.

Which Is Right for You?

For instance, people who can walk, but need to take frequent rests will benefit from a mobility scooter.

With their longer size, scooters are a little more difficult to navigate in tight spaces. Nonetheless, they are often less expensive than electric wheelchairs. Despite their higher cost, electric wheelchairs can provide life-changing differences for people with both upper and lower body mobility problems.
