Hunters look forward to the fall hunt all year for its comfortable temperatures, bustling wildlife, and beautiful scenery. However, hunting trips are only fun if you can keep everyone in your party safe during the excursion. Here are three safety practices you should follow while hunting, and how they can help.

Best Hunting Safety Tips

1. Plan for Inclement Weather

Your body can lose heat and moisture quickly when you are busy focusing on other things, so always research the weather patterns carefully and plan for the worst. Hypothermia can set in even when temperatures are as warm as 50 degrees, so dress in layers that you can easily put on and remove as needed.

2. Act Like Every Gun Is Loaded

huntingA fatal accident can happen in an instant, especially when you are handling powerful firearms. To keep yourself and the rest of your party safe, treat every gun like it is loaded at all times. When you clean, inspect, or check out weapons, never point them towards anyone else. If your weapon develops problems when you are using it, avoid looking down the barrel or pointing the gun at your body as you inspect it.

3. Watch for Fellow Hunters

As you move through the wilderness, try to remain visible to other hunters who might also be tracking movements. Consider talking with your fellow hunters as you travel to new destinations, and make noise by rustling your feet or moving foliage out of the way. Although these actions may scare away wildlife temporarily, they could also keep you from being unintentionally shot by a fellow hunter.
