Wedding flowers are a beautiful part of the ceremony and reception. These beautiful mementos don’t have to die and be thrown out within a day or two of the big event, even if you’re headed to or hosting a destination wedding. Below, there are four tips for keeping flowers in top shape in transit so you can enjoy them longer.

Preserve Wedding Flowers for the Trip Home from a Destination Wedding With This Advice

1. Read up on the Rules

Where is the wedding you’re attending? If it’s outside of the U.S., you may need to check with the United States Department of Agriculture to learn about whether you can bring wedding flowers back into the states. For example, blooms from Puerto Rico may not be allowed due to concerns about pests or diseases.

2. Use Preservatives

wedding flowersBefore you travel back from the event it’s a good idea to place the flowers in a vase and add preservatives. You can get these powdered mixes that contain sugar, acid, and bleach at a florist. The bloom stems will soak up the solution and give them a better chance of lasting through your travels.

3. Keep the Stalks Wet

Wedding flowers need water to survive, but the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not allow passengers to bring flowers in water. You can help keep yours wet in transit by wrapping a paper towel around the stems and wetting it down with the preservative/water mix. Then, wrap a plastic bag around them to prevent leakage and reduce evaporation. Tie the bag in place with a rubber binder or string to make them easier to carry.

4. Stash Them in a Box

Finally, place the beautiful blooms in a flower box. You may hold the bouquet in your lap to ensure top security or keep them in hard-sided luggage. Some flights will even allow you to stash the wedding flowers in the galley where a flight attendant could water them as needed based on the length of the flight. Don’t hesitate to ask the airline what accommodations they can make to help bring your blooms back home.
