Eyebrows were raised by the Associated Press’s 2016 claims that flossing isn’t proven to be effective. While this is an older claim, many people still stumble upon it and tout it as fact, which could lead to an influx of patients visiting the dentist for issues that could have been prevented. Below, you’ll find an explanation for why and how you should continue to floss.

Why Research Is Limited

The ADA addressed the anti-flossing claims, acknowledging that research was limited due to several factors. For one, the main study that showed the significant benefits of flossing had a small sample size, which means the results may not be reliable. Another reason research is limited is because it’s hard for a dentist to reliably study the effects of flossing. The varying techniques patients use for flossing make it hard to have a controlled study, and patients can be dishonest when discussing their flossing habits, even when they know they’re part of a study.

Why You Should Still Floss

dentistThe potential benefits of flossing far outweigh any costs. Short-term studies linked flossing to a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis in dental patients. Plus, the ADA points out in the same article above that a meta-analysis of available studies found that flossing at least five days a week, in conjunction with other teeth cleaning practices, led to a reduction in cavities between the teeth.

This is important because gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease, which has been linked to heart disease and strokes. Periodontal disease is also thought to make it harder for people with diabetes to manage their condition. Cavities can also cause health issues, such as abscesses or even sepsis if left untreated long enough, leading to tooth extractions, root canals, and other surgical treatments.

When & How Often to Floss

For optimal results, a dentist will recommend flossing at least once a day, 5 days a week at minimum. Flossing is best done before bedtime, as it removes any food particles that have accumulated throughout the day. You should maintain your other teeth cleaning practices like brushing and using mouthwash as well.
